Many lawmakers on Capitol Hill have been pushing for long-haul flights at National Airport for years. But the senators from Virginia and Maryland are firmly against the provision, pointing to safety concerns. AdvertisementFor many members of Congress, the allure of adding long-haul flights to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is impossible to resist. While Delta Air Lines has thrown its support behind the long-haul provision, United Airlines has opposed the push. Washington Dulles International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, while fully equipped to handle long-haul flights, are miles outside of Washington, DC.

AdvertisementSeven House Republicans have proposed renaming an international airport just outside the nation's capital after former President Donald Trump. Guy Reschenthaler, a Pennsylvania Republican, introduced a bill late last week to rename Washington Dulles International Airport, which was named after former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. Related stories"As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than hearing 'Welcome to Trump International Airport' as they land on American soil," Reschenthaler told Fox News. Republicans in Congress and at the state level have repeatedly attempted efforts to buttress Trump's legacy. The other major airport in the DC area, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, was renamed after Reagan in 1998.

Passengers make their way through the terminal as they travel ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday at Washington Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Virginia, on Nov. 22, 2023. American Airlines last year started using new technology to assign flight gates at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the world's second-busiest airport and American's biggest hub, where it operates out of 135 regional and mainline gates. "It took the nightly process of gating the airline from four hours to about 10 minutes," said American COO David Seymour. The gating technology in other airports aims to avoid gate congestion that could delay flights from departing or parking upon arrival. Short taxi times and other improvements can help airlines save fuel, one of airlines' biggest costs.

Southwest Airlines flight attendants would get 36% cumulative pay increases in a new five-year contract, according to details of the tentative agreement shared with crews Wednesday. The flight attendants are the latest aviation labor group to win proposed pay hikes after fraught years-long negotiations for new labor details. Flight attendants are scheduled to start voting on the tentative agreement mid-November. If approved, Southwest will also increase pay for on-call flight attendants by 8% and provide overtime pay if they are called into work outside of their on-call window. Pilots and flight attendants have repeatedly complained about unpredictable schedules and difficulties getting assignments during flight disruptions.

REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - The Biden administration's nominee to head the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Wednesday the agency must address a persistent air traffic controller shortage that has caused flight delays. Nominee Michael Whitaker, a former deputy FAA administrator, told the Senate Commerce Committee he would support opening a second air traffic controller academy to address staffing. The FAA has been without a Senate-confirmed administrator for 18 months after the prior nominee withdrew. U.S. airlines have expressed growing frustration with air traffic staff shortages. Whitaker told the confirmation hearing he was not involved in the certification of the Boeing (BA.N) 737 MAX when he was deputy FAA administrator.

A United Airlines Airbus A319-100 jet takes off from Washington National Airport in Washington, U.S., August 9, 2017. The latest order is the second major aircraft purchase by United over the past year. In December, it unveiled a huge order of 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 100 737 MAXs. The large 787 order is likely to raise further questions about the future of outstanding United orders for 45 Airbus A350s which have already been deferred to at least 2030. Nocella said while A350 is a "great machine" and there is no change in the company's order, United is focused on its 787 fleet in the short-run.

Former President Donald Trump will not head to trial next month alongside two of his co-defendants whose prosecutions in the sweeping Georgia election interference case were severed by a judge Thursday. But McAfee declined an effort by Chesebro and Powell to separate their cases from each other, meaning they are both set to head to the same trial on Oct. 23. The ruling is a blow to Georgia prosecutors who wanted to keep all 19 co-defendants together in the case. McAfee wrote in his order that severing Chesebro and Powell was "simply a procedural and logistical inevitability." "The Fulton County Courthouse simply contains no courtroom adequately large enough to hold all 19 defendants, their multiple attorneys and support staff, the sheriff's deputies, court personnel, and the State's prosecutorial team," McAfee wrote.

An American Airlines plane sits at the gate at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Arlington, Virginia on february 23, 2023American Airlines and Spirit Airlines on Wednesday joined other carriers in warning that higher costs will hit profits during the bustling summer quarter. The carrier halved its operating margin from a forecast earlier this summer to 4% to 5%. Spirit Airlines expects negative margins of as much as 15.5% in the three months ending Sept. 30, down from an earlier estimate of -5.5% to -7.5%. Airlines have lost the pricing power they commanded last summer when capacity was more constrained coming out of the pandemic, even though demand has been strong. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines cut their third-quarter forecasts earlier this month.

More than half of U.S. adults, 54%, said they think Trump should face criminal charges in that case, while 42% disagreed, according to the university's latest national survey, released Wednesday. The governor, who was just six points behind Trump in Quinnipiac's national poll in February, trailed the former president by 39 points in the survey released Wednesday. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,818 American adults between Aug. 10-14 in its latest poll, which had a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points. The polling period ended on the same day that Trump was hit with his fourth criminal indictment, this one related to his alleged scheme to reverse his loss in Georgia's 2020 election. Sixty-eight percent of respondents in Quinnipiac's poll said that if a person is convicted of a felony, they should not be eligible to run for president.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Aug 9 (Reuters) - U.S. regulators said on Wednesday they will extend temporary cuts to minimum flight requirements at congested New York City-area airports and Washington National Airport through Oct. 28, citing air traffic controller staffing issues. Major airlines on Monday sought an extension of the waiver, saying air traffic staffing levels in a key New York air traffic sector have not "meaningfully improved." A government audit in June said the FAA faces critical air traffic staffing and disclosed New York TRACON staffing was at 54% compared with optimal levels. Airlines for America, an industry trade group said air traffic control staffing and extreme weather "are unique circumstances beyond our control." Last summer, there were 41,498 flights from New York airports where FAA air traffic control staffing was a contributing factor in delays.

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump told a judge they want a hearing for a protective order sought by prosecutors in his criminal election case delayed until next week, despite the judge asking both sides to offer her dates on or before Friday. Prosecutors from the office of special counsel Jack Smith, in turn, told U.S. District Judge Tayna Chutkan they are available for the hearing on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. The protective order sought by Smith would bar Trump from publicly revealing some evidence collected during the criminal investigation. The joint notice filed Tuesday said that Trump wants both of his lawyers, John Lauro and Todd Blanche, to be present for the hearing. "Mr. Lauro is available on Thursday, with a preference for an afternoon setting," the filing said.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Major U.S. airlines on Monday asked the Federal Aviation Administration to extend cuts to minimum flight requirements at congested New York City-area airports and a Washington airport, citing a lack of adequate air traffic control staffing. Airlines can lose their slots at congested airports if they do not use them at least 80% of the time. In the Airlines for America letter, the group said air traffic control staffing and extreme weather "are unique circumstances beyond our control." In June, a government audit said the FAA faces critical air traffic staffing shortages and "lacks a plan to address them." WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Thursday to federal charges that he orchestrated a plot to try to overturn his 2020 election loss in what U.S. prosecutors call an unprecedented effort by the then-president to undermine the pillars of American democracy. He previously pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he retained classified documents after leaving office and New York state charges that he falsified documents in connection with hush money payments to a porn star. Trump may soon face more charges in Georgia, where a state prosecutor is investigating his attempts to overturn the election there. The indictment describes a phone call in which Pence told Trump there was no legal basis for the theory that Pence could block certification of the election. Although Pence repeatedly told Trump he lacked the authority to reject electoral votes from certain states, Trump kept repeating the claim.

Before the pandemic hit in 2020, corporate travel was the travel industry's cash cow. Investors in travel companies are concerned that the spending from vacationers cannot make up the shortfall. For months, Alaska Air's (ALK.N) business bookings have been 25% below pre-pandemic levels. JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) said on Tuesday it will redeploy capacity away from New York to high-margin leisure destinations with business travel demand 20% below pre-pandemic levels. Recent passenger screening and fare data shows U.S. travel demand has peaked, hurting the carriers' pricing power.

Southwest Airlines shares slid more than 6% in premarket trading Thursday after the airline reported lower unit revenue and higher costs during the second quarter — and said the trends are likely to continue this quarter. The Dallas-based airline's second-quarter unit revenue dropped 8.3% from a year earlier, Southwest said, citing a policy change last summer that removed expiration dates from pandemic travel credits. The carrier said it expects unit revenue to fall as much as 7% during the third quarter on capacity up 12% from a year earlier. Airlines have enjoyed record revenue in recent months, but airfare in the U.S. has dropped from 2022, according to the latest inflation read.

Congress is working to overhaul air travel at a time of growing dysfunction and disruption in the system, as lawmakers haggle over a bill to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration for the next half-decade and make a number of changes that could affect passengers. Republicans and the airline industry largely oppose new regulations of the industry intended to strengthen consumer protections. And Washington-area representatives have said they would block the measure if it allowed for more long-distance flights in and out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, just outside the capital. But the House dispensed with some of the major potential obstacles on Wednesday night. It narrowly rejected, 229 to 205, a bipartisan proposal to add seven new round-trip flights to Reagan National Airport, potentially smoothing the road to final passage.
